What is coaching?

What is coaching and what can it do for you? This is a question I get asked a lot when I tell people I’m a coach. It’s a beautiful question and one I love answering.  Simply put, coaching provides a judgement free space in which you can be curious and cultivate new awareness around who you are and how you behave in the world. It can help you move from where you are now to where you desire to be.

In this post, you’ll learn:

  • How coaching provides a unique space for inner transformation

  • The power of the dynamic partnership formed in coaching

  • The benefits of having a judgement free zone

  • How coaching can help you get “unstuck”

A unique space for cultivating self-awareness and new ways of being

Coaching provides a unique space in which you can be genuinely curious and work with your coach to cultivate a new awareness around who you are and how you show up in the world. Why does this matter? Well, the reality is that you cannot change what you do not notice. So, before anything else, you must make space to observe your way of being. Coaching provides such a space, where you can look at and begin to understand your thought patterns, your way of taking action (or lack thereof) and the belief systems that influence how you behave in your home, work, relationships, community, etc. From here, you can begin to pull apart what you discover in a space where there’s no judgement, no right or wrong. It’s an opportunity to pause and really ask yourself if the way that you’ve been being in the world is serving you. And, if it’s not, to work with your coach to determine what you do want and how you want to move forward.

The power of a dynamic partnership in career coaching

The thing that’s beautiful about coaching, in my own experience as a client and as a coach, is the dynamic partnership that’s formed between the coach and the client. I can speak to this from both sides, being held in this way and holding my clients in this way, as naturally creative, resourceful and whole. What this means for me, is that I am not here to “fix” my clients. I don’t believe I have “the answer”. I believe that my clients have the answer (you have the answer) and the partnership we create in coaching allows you the safe space to uncover what that answer is for yourself. To tune out the outside noise and be able to really feel into what’s true for you in the moment.

The benefits of a judgment free zone

You can have an amazing partner, really close friends, a strong relationship with your family, and they provide a really important support system to listen to you and share with. They can give you meaningful advice and share their experience from their own journey. And, their own assessments or judgements will always influence how they respond. Whether they realize it or not, they will often feel impacted by your situation and move to give you unsolicited advice. They may want and try to fix your problem, and sometimes that’s really not what you need. Instead, what you need is a judgement free zone. A place where you can openly share what’s on your mind, your fears, your desires, your roadblocks, and know that the person sitting across from you will listen and share their unbiased reflection with you in support of your ultimate learning and growth.

How career coaching can you help get “unstuck”

So, have you ever had an idea of where you want to go or how you want to move forward, but you just feel you can’t take action? A coaching container is one of the unique spaces where you can begin to release old narratives and ways of being rooted in fear, shame, scarcity, etc. In so many ways, your behaviors are not random, they served a purpose and we don’t want to judge them or say they’re wrong. We want to honor the role they’ve played in your life and then begin to shift and expand your perspective of what’s possible now. To support you to come back to yourself and learn new ways of being that might better support how you want to show up in the world and how you want to take action.

This is a really powerful piece about ontological (way of being) coaching. As an ontological coach, I work with you to strengthen your inner observation through the three doorways of (1) your body (physical posture, physiology, nervous system); (2) your moods and emotions; and (3) your language (spoken language, inner dialogue). Together, these three doorways provide you the capacity to take more effective action in your life.
